Before I came to America, English study had never been a fun experience
for me. During my middle school year, I was regarded as one of the stupidest
students in the English class because of my poor memorization skill. Once, the
teacher assigned homework, memorizing a short text, which was less than 100
characters. I spent hours to do it. However, one the second day, I was one of
the only few students who could not recite the text, and I was the only student
who worked hard on it but still could not finish the homework. The teacher
punished us to face the back wall and memorize the text while other students
were taking the class. Whoever finished could raise his or her hand and recite
the text in front of the class so that they could go back to their seats.
Eventually, I stood in the back awkwardly for another two classes. It was not
only because it took me so long to memorize, but also because I was too
embarrassed to remember anything when I stood in front of the class. This was
only one of the many bad memories through my English literacy learning
experience. Therefore, it surprised everyone, even myself that I am studying in
America.
