Homework 3 9/12/13

Summarize Gee’s argument

Gee wants to demonstrate what is literacy. He start with the definition of discourse, which means ‘conversion’ of a people, people have different levels, ways of conversion with different identities.

These are several important points about discourses, one must speak and act while being in the discourse, and controlling over certain discourses can lead to the acquisition of social goods.

Then Gee start to distinguish the difference between acquisition and learning. We are better at what we acquire, but we consciously know more about what we have learned. Learning to read is also learning some aspect of some discourse.

Later, Gee back to the topic of what is literacy: Literacy is control of secondary uses of language which is the uses of language in secondary discourses. There are also two types of literacy: the dominant type, which means to be able to control the literacy and the powerful type, which means to be able to master the literacy.  Secondary discourses are used in social institutions beyond the family, people are require to communicate with non - intimates.

In the end, Gee stated that Literacy is mastered through acquisition and talked about discourse education for both mainstream students and non - mainstream students.
