Summarize Gee’s argument

        Author explain the word discourse at the beginning of the article. Discourse  means “ the appropriate costume and instructions on how to act and talk so as to take a particular role that others will recognize.” (Gee, p.257). For discourse, each people should participates or it can not be called discourse. People who is doing discourse with others have certain chance to criticize other’s opinion but that person can never stand out of discourse and criticize the people. If you can speak and have your opinion, and you are member of the society, then you are frequently doing discourse with others. Discourse is the exchanging of the information between different people and opinions. Because of that, people also get chance to change the society thought discourse and it can be related to distribution of society.
       Later on, the writer writes about the differences between learning and acquisition in people's studying. In writer’s opinion, people learn language by both acquisition and learning, but the balance of them will be depending on many circumstances. Acquisition is much better at performance. Compare with acquisition, learning is better at meta-level knowledge. He also makes the point that “learning to read is always learning some aspect of some dis course” (Gee, p259). “Extent that reading as both decoding and interpretation is a
performance” (Gee, p260). and give the example of the reading course he took before to explain this.
        So the word literacy is a vague term. The author thinks that literacy is the control of the use of the second language. He mention the term primary discourse and secondary discourse. primary discourses is what people use to their close relationship. Relatively, second discourse used at society not between like families who is very close to you, people play different rolls in the society and use different types of second discourse.So discourse is a communication, it can not be done by only one person. It’s a cooperation between people and  it need to be a conversation rather than a single person's speech. Each person have their thought and have chance to contribute to the communication during the discourse.
In the end, author has a feel that using acquisition is more fit for a language than learning.  literacy is control of secondary discourse. Literacy can be mastered by acquisition is the understanding by the author.
